Dr. Phillips Tennis teams sweep the 2010 District Championship
Women’s Tennis captured 19 of 21 points and secured singles lines one, three and four and both doubles lines championships to win their first District Championship since 2005. While everyone, including Brittany Hubbard, played some outstanding tennis over the two days, there are two matches that were exceptional. First, Laura Betourne on line four. Struggling with a knee injury all season, Laura played a three hour, three set match against Olympia before coming out on top. Not only was it a display full of heart and courage, but it was the victory that secured the championship. Over on line one singles, Maria Contreras started the day off right, securing the first set 6-0 against Olympia. She had a little more to deal with in the second set, but came out comfortably on top. Team Captain Lindsey Woody had an easy victory against Apopka on line three and then along with Betourne, also won the line two doubles championship against East Ridge. The match of the day, however, was sweet revenge for Kelsey Haddock and Contreras on line one doubles. Even though DP won our regular season match against Olympia, the ladies fell in the doubles line, 8-2. But this was for the District Championship! The girls lost the opening set, but came storming back to win the second 7-5. With the cheers of their teammates ringing in their ears, they secured the line one championship with a 6-0 demolition of their opponents in the deciding set. Up next for the ladies is the Regional semifinal match against Boone at Lake Cane next Tuesday at 3:00.
